<Physically connected to, does in a certain sense mean "not separate from", but not in an ethically relevant sense.>

There is no such thing as a stage of developement not being ethically relevant assuming one feels the need to bring ethics into the issue... ie. claim separateness of mother and child during various stages of offspring developement.

<Completely dependent on does not mean "not separate from".>

No, a small child is still "completely dependant on" (well, of course, not quite... the child can survive if something were to happen) the mother. "Not separate from" means not separate from... at various early stages there is literally only one organism...that organism is in the process of creating another viable life. As that process continues of course the life becomes more and more 'seperate' if you will... with greateer and greater chance of survival.

<Conjoined twins are not physically separate but they are separate individuals.>

This is twins, not mother offspring... developement, as far as the mother is concerned is complete. HOWEVER... actually physically connected twins may or may not be fully "separate" depending on the inner arrangement of organs.

BUT, this is not a good analogy for what we're talking about since at various states of developement the mother and child connection is much more profound than the simple sharing of an organ or two... the mother IS the kidney... IS the liver, etc. The mother IS the baby and the entire environment in which the baby developes... including psychologically.

As an interesting aside, some interesting studies show people recieving transplants from others tend to pick up habits, etc. of the donor of the organ.
