There's a lot more going on here than the Pacific NW.

I know what you are talking about, though. Portland's light rail is a great example of mass transit spurring on urban development. But as of now, the light rail still can only serve a small minority of Portland's working residents.

Mass transit here in Southern California, of course, is horrendous. I've never racked up so many miles on my car and burned so much gas trying to do mundane things like go out to my favorite restaurants or go shopping at the hip malls. It's so spread out here, despite what it seems like with the traffic. I'm going to get to 200K miles on my car before I know it.
