Tim, you're assuming I'm saying things I'm not saying.

1. On the charge that Reagan's campaign went to Philadelphia, Miss to send a signal to southern white folk, that's the accepted wisdom of the reason for the trip. If you think that's wrong, then go for it. But it takes more evidence than something advanced by David Brooks.

2. As for when the Reps came to dominate the south, my point was the LBJ's prescient comment about the loss of the south was taken up by all subsequent Rep presidential campaigns save Gerald Ford.

3. As for whether those campaigns were attempts to get southern white folks because of racial resentment, that's been the basis for untold number of analyses of their strategies. Just a bit of conventional wisdom. If someone has a strong argument otherwise, it would be interesting to hear.

4. As for whether it's racist or not, I leave that up to you. Clearly, the whole point of the campaigns was to get the votes of whites who resented the civil rights movement, affirmative action, etc. Come to your own conclusion as to the label.
