Oh, agreed. Norway is incredibly advantaged: although arguably no more than many other small nations with a lot of oil wealth. But they've also been extremely sensible in how they use that wealth, and in the kind of society they've tried to create notwithstanding the money. And they actually have ethical considerations about how they invest, which I believe is unique in sovereign funds.

I don't know if it's something common to Scandinavian societies, and then Norway added oil wealth to that... but there are reasons that they always top the 'quality of life' charts rather than places like Dubai, Borneo or Azerbaijan.

In the latter way, Norway is like Alaska.

Which explains why Alaska wants to secede. Or at least set up a self-governance zone like the Kurds.

Allen'

It would be great if the US could afford to give all its citizens the cushy benefits Norwegians get, without taxing them into the ground. Sadly, we can't.

Interesting comments. The US never lacked a bounty of resources, we just never managed them well. Not only minerals, but the US had fantastic farming and timberlands that had potential very much like the oil rich nations. We gobbled them up and now wonder what happened.

We could also have given our people cushy benefits, but we choose to other things with our money - especially the wars now makes that very clear. These are all chooses we made.
