OTOH some of the statements that I've read about how things will be worse than the great depression etc. are just way over the top.

The $60 Trillion is just the hedging cost on the $500 trillion of derivatives and other crap out there. Which could only be ginned up with permitted 60X leverage, since there aren't $500 trillion of assets in the entire world. Monopoly money for ultra-wealthy idiots and entities.

Which suggests to me that there's some sort a simple solution to deleverage all this crap. Maybe just proclaim the Zero in the 60X leverage REALLY IS zero, and ALL current leverage is now 1/10 of what it was, as far as valuation goes? For a start..
