Maybe not in overall territory, so much the same positions are supported, but in lines of what is considered mainstream within that overall "Republican" range?

Edit: I found one odd part in Powell's endorsement. He said that the GOP had moved right recently. I don't see it having moved right since Powell retired from the military and took up politics. It seemed to me he was trying to find another good excuse for his new found distaste for the GOP.

I'm not certain what he meant by "recently." It's certainly the case it has moved right since 92 when Bush 41 lost. My guess is he was saying something like I've watched it slide ever rightward, more control by the further right, and I've finally had my fill of it.

But just guessing.
