I don't like the opening much either. I posted it for the rest of the column. Perhaps I should have posted and excerpt, but when you post most of a column, but not the opening you get accused of "selectively quoting", "quoting out of context", and distorting the message.

I don't consider that to be a useful or accurate accusation in many cases. I post statements by others because of their ideas or arguments that I agree with, not because I'm presenting the person making the statements as an authority. So if they say something else that I don't agree with, my thought is that it doesn't matter much. Perhaps I'll quote more selectively in the future.

The one case where selective quoting is a problem, is when its used to make it look like someone is supporting some thing or idea that they are not. In that case "quoting out of context" is a bad thing, but that's not what I'm talking about doing.
