but unless the electoral roll is somehow seriously ****ed up you only get one card.

What happens if you lose the card?

In the US its different in different states, and sometimes even if the policy is the same across the state its enforced differently in different counties or at different poling places.

In some places you have to show an ID, in others there is no specific policy about IDs, in some poll workers are explicitly not allowed to ask for IDs.
