Politics is all about compromise and negotiation. If it wasn't, it would be called war.

Do you outlaw parties and, if you do, what replaces them? Many people vote the straight party ticket because most people don't have the time or energy to remember which person is running for which position below, say, US Congress. At least by voting for the party, people have an idea of what someone stands for.

People could have voted for, say, Ron Paul but he didn't appeal to enough people. Ditto someone like Ralph Nader or Huckabee. We have choices but people are forever choosing the middle of the road candidate...most people want plain ice cream, sprinkles scare them.
