What is now described as "Libertarianism" is philosophically far closer to "Goldwater-style" than to the religious conservative wing of the modern GOP --- which perhaps goes far in explaining why (as the article observes) it's the Mountain West that's in political motion now... more so than the Old South.

Yes, but libertarians or (call them what you will) fiscally conservative, individually rights oriented pragmatists must have a home in future political campaigns. I am not sure they will be Republicans. Or they will wrest control of the issues debate from the social conservatives and reclaim their old leadership in the republican party.

But in two years the democrats will have created an opportunity for a viable alternative.

Time will tell.
