24 years ago I realized that the Royal Society wasn't that great at the science involved when they came up with a wishy washy investigation into lead in petrol though at least they came to the correct conclusion that it should be removed from petrol to protect childrens' brains.

But it was another decade before it was stopped and it should have been stopped on an urgent basis and dramatically reduced immediately.

Muriel Newman was previously a Member of Parliament for act.org.nz which I support and I have helped her with campaigning, so as Neo and I have pointed out about choosing sides on CO2, her opposition to emissions trading schemes fits her politic ideology.

Such a political divide would make sense if socialists valued quality of life better than capitalists, but they don't. In fact, capitalists put greater value on quality of life including air and water quality because they can afford to better than can people needing some cash for subsistence living.

A corollary is that capitalists often make worse politicians in some ways, on average, because they are more used to money and are more comfortable with spending up large. Look at the vast spending over the last 8 years by Bush and Congress. Unfortunately, most people with OPM [left or right] get their kicks out of boasting about just how huge their budgets are and focus on making them bigger, results being of slight importance.
