That's the system they had in the National Forest outside of commercial lines. That's where I used it.

I got myself one of those crank phones on eBay, just like the ones I used up at Elk Summit. I'm going to use it as a phone cabinet if I can find a place for it.

Back when I was a kid we had an old black bakelite phone with no dial. You'd pick it up and the operator would be there with "number please."

I was always mystified that the operator knew my name. She'd say, "hello Smithee"

Blew my young mind. I realize no she probably knew my mother and hence my name.
