and we still didn't get a big boost on H1 visas for tech workers.

Uh.. put yourself in the political position of these legislators.. Are you going to press for H1 Visas while we have 10% of Mexico living here already? And to be fair, there is pressure on both parties from the agricultural voting block to permit immigration without all of the red tape.

Yes, a temporary work permit program should have been implemented, but explain that the average American who doesn't want to compete with immigrants for jobs. The democrats want higher wages for their constituency, while the consumer wants cheap consumables subsidized by cheap labor, which creates a dynamic where if one business is using illegal immigrants, they are more competitive.

Certainly businesses don't want to pay the H1 visa fees when they can get labor for free and pay them less. And much of this is controlled at the local and state levels by not

It's a political non-starter.

I'm not saying the issue isn't complex. What I'm saying is that the democrats sought to create incentives for even more illegals to come because now they could purchase homes, rather than rent. And our citizenship laws have permitted their children born in the US to obtain instant citizenship. So the Democrats are trying to take political advantage of this dynamic via amnesty and voting programs.

So I agree that the solution to this is to expand the temporary work visa program, and make employers responsible for the care of their imported employees.

And certainly had they both taken steps to thwart illegal immigration. But, of course, we never do anything in this country until a crisis has arisen and we're facing the consequences.

And that's when we need someone in office who understands the issue (as McCain certainly does), but has the integrity to ensure that any resolution ensures only those who can make a definite positive contribution to American society are granted the path to amnesty.
