It uses the people's money to support commerce in the "interest of the people," by governmental decree. Despite the so-called "private" ownership of Fannie and Freddie, and the private money grubbing among the ranks of their executives, they were always backed by governmental decree with the peoples money in the "interest of the people." That's socialism.

Providing private institutions in an economic crisis with access to gov't funding is not socialism. Creating institutions like FNM and FRE that are independent of the gov't but were created to accomplish certain goals desired by the gov't is not socialism either.

Economic socialism is when the gov't has complete control over the kind and nature of production in all industries; where workers have greater control over the methods of production in their particular industry. The US is no where close to this type of economic system. Few economies in this world are purely capitalistic but the US comes pretty damn close. So all this fear mongering over how the US is going socialistic is a bunch of BS promulgated by the ultra conservatives in this country. Frankly, you all need to get a life.

Now if you want to know what economic socialism is really all about you can start reading here for a very brief intro:

>>Government doesn't work,

Freedom Works,<<

Could you explain that statement in relation to rural electrification in the first half of the last century ?
I'd be interested in your take on that.
