"Any economist will tell you that sometimes free markets simply cannot even get off the ground without government intervention" has no bearing on the fact that a Free Market by definition cannot contain elements of socialism and still have its existence called a free market, or a result of a free market.

How did you get to work today? You left your home which was built to government code, got in your car that was built in compliance with 100's of government regulations, drove on a road that was built and maintained by government, obeying the government speed limits, stopping at the government stop lights and stop signs, watched over by government police.

You want a 'free market', go to Haiti... it's so free there is no infrastructure, no rule of law and no way to produce wealth.

Koan: "'I do not know why I bother: what you have written below is not only nuts, but exactly what got us into this mess i.e. pure capitalism needs no government intervention and is self correcting. Crazy talk like that sociopathic ghoul Ayn Rand spews.

First, corporations are by their very nature sociopathic. So a social democracy provides the conscience.

And just like sociopaths corporations make big mistakes pursuing greed and care not who they hurt. They also have myopic vision.

Two: Pure capitalism could be called fascism. Taking the logic of a pure self regulating capitalism state, to its extreme logic, one might argue it could replace democracy.

Yeah, I agree with you freedom works. Democratic freedom whereby the individual decides who makes dicisions for them at the ballot box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And our democraticly elected society tells corporations what they can and cannot do e.g. you cannot pour mercury in the Misissippi river!!

Dan B>>Really? I wonder. You might easily surmise that since I never finished my major in economics, I am not one.

Maybe he is, but his "Any economist will tell you that sometimes free markets simply cannot even get off the ground without government intervention" has no bearing on the fact that a Free Market by definition cannot contain elements of socialism and still have its existence called a free market, or a result of a free market. It's preposterous. He said that by stating this basic truth, my lack of knowledge was revealed.

He may mince words all day, I'll see, but he can't change the obvious well-known requisite of a free market: no government help or interference.
