I do think Liddy is unrepentant. He believes he is a patriot. In that respect he is misguided, I think. But to compare him to Bill Ayers, or for that matter to Rev. "I hate the white folk" Wright, is a real stretch.

You are missing the point. It is silly to condemn McCain for Liddy, just as it is silly to condemn Obama for Ayers. Condemnation by association is wrong, especially when that association is serendipitous. The nature of a politician's job makes it extremely likely they will come into contact with all sorts of nefarious characters during their career. If those associations are used to damage the country or gain personal advantage, then that would be wrong. If not, then it's just a smear to condemn by association.
