I think the media does get it but I think they sensationalize the news to instill fear in individual investors and viewers. Fear sells and it's good for ratings...it's like watching a train wreck, you really don't want to see it but you can't keep yourself from looking.

The VIX shows we're at historic fear levels. It's the deleveraging in hedge funds that didn't exist in any other recession that is driving the market volatility.

The hedge funds caused GOOG to reach $750, X to $196, FCX to $127, etc. Those stocks never should have gone that high, but by the same token they probably shouldn't be as low as they are right now. Once the deleveraging subsides stocks will find equilibrium at higher prices, all IMO of course.
