A lot of people just want to have some hope again for something instead of total disgust with Washington's f'ups while the economy falls apart around our ears. Contrast the mumbling, ineffectual incumbent with someone who talks about action and uniting people to fix their real problems, and you are on to something exciting.

The proof will be in the pudding, of course.

Watching the sea of cheering young faces on election night........what exactly it is that they are hoping for

Kate,

The thing that may get lost in all the sentimental historical hoopla is the fact that the better candidate, the better leader won. It is easy to see that if one sheds the prisms of ideology, religion and prejudice.

The essence of the national identity is that it is a meritocracy - Obama nailed it in his acceptance speech.

They may not really be hoping for anything in particular, just relieved by the affirmation of their faith in the country.
