Ah but it was oh so effective as a mobilizing tool. You're right. "All so unnecessary" was a miss. "Necessary" depends on one's objective. Let me just leave it at "sad."

That's the ugly cynicism behind these "moral" arguments; the Roves and Atwaters of the world were sitting behind the scenes like the Wizard of Oz pulling everyone's strings just to win an election. Indeed. Even as a religious person myself, I always felt the union between Evangelicals and the GOP was an 'unholy alliance' of sorts. And I suspect there will come a time when the degree to which the religious right was used and abused by the GOP is clearly understood and a real backlash could occur.
