I think religious belief becomes what people are, so they can't separate belief from politics- to the religious they are the same thing. It's why the religious are dangerous to secular folks, and it's also why the religious perceive secular folks as dangerous- since secular people screw up the schemas that the religious would like to create in the service of their various beliefs. Since the secularists do things which defy God, they need to be controlled (for their own good, of course). Those who resist such control are attacking conservative values.
