it is not doable for any electric company out here to start with a 40K product because the factories have to be built. But for GM, if they wanted to build a 40K electric car it astounds me that they cannot, given that they have all the factories intact. Yes they need to be retooled, but come on. Japan is doing it, for much less.

I believe the strategy is to get a government subsidy for maybe $3k-5k of the purchase price, leasing the batteries for $10k for 10-years instead of including them in the purchase price, bringing the retail sale price down to a net $25,000 for the Chevy Volt.

The price would be $25K plus about $110 per month for the battery, which would be offset by about an equal saving in fuel.

The car pays for the extra cost in about 4-5 years at $4/gallon gas. If gas is $2/gallon, it's more costly to own than a Prius.

I've heard even higher numbers for the sale price of the Volt, and that's the problem with what is essentially a plug in Civic, where the Civic is 17k... It's just not gonna fly anytime soon without massive subsidies, especially if gas stays at 4/gallon or below and you can get over 30mpg with the Honda.

Regards,
John

PS - As for Tesla, they started with what is essentially a Lotus and threw their electric drivetrain into it for 110K. They are having trouble getting financing now, and are being kept afloat thru Elon Musk's millions. Their days are numbered IMO unless someone thinks their tech is worth buying...
