Most people know the cars are good,

Yeah...well, they are competing against guy's whose cars are great and whose relevant lineup is better and whose brand name is golden.

Most people know the cars are good, the gas hike, unions, and poor financial management is what did them in.

When a business that is both labor and capital intensive has almost no control over its labor, it has a difficult task ahead of it.

The auto builders have their own selves to blame for allowing the unions to get so much power -- no doubt about that. But a person can get a reasonably fuel-efficient American built car if they choose to do so.

It costs a lot of money to retool a plant to build, for example, the tiny cars they drive in Europe, and they have to weigh the potential value in selling such cars versus that of selling big Caddys.

There is no doubt bad decisions have been made, but the range of possible decisions is vastly limited by the presence of unions who can veto anything that improves efficiency within a plant.
