Bob,

The BMI is utterly worthless. It makes me question the intelligence of doctors as a whole.

There is a method that was mentioned in Dr. Eades article that he uses in his (Protein Power) books and picked up by Dr. Sears in his (Zone) books. For men, it involves 3 figures, weight, abdominal circumference and wrist circumference. I found the web site that takes these 3 parameters. You take those 3 figures and look up the % in a table.

I found a web site that takes these 3 parameters here, so I am assuming they use the same method:
in2nutrition.com

For females, the parameters are slightly different (IIRC, involving hip circumference as well).

Joe

Way back when, they would dunk you in a tank to find out how much fat you had. That being impractical and expensive for the population at large, they tried calipers, then went to a BMI determined by working backwards from your weight and height. Corrupted the whole idea of finding out how much fat you have. It may not work but it's convenient, which is like looking for your lost keys under the street light. It's no different from the old height and weight charts, just reduces it to one number.

BMI works fine as a general guideline to reach the largest audience possible in a simple easy to understand format.

It may be the single factor that made me realize I wasn't just a "little" bit overweight anymore...and do something about it.

To try to debunk it because it may not fit perfectly for the 3% of the population that looks like a steroid monster is a little over the top.

And so is assuming those people are healthy...or will remain so with their high maintenance artificial build.
