I used the calculator, and came up with 37% body fat. Which I think is in line with my profile. I still have about 32 lbs to go.

Just make sure you don't suck in your gut when you measure your waist! :>)

The BMI says I'm obese and need to lose another 50 pounds.

Another way to put it is your waist should be no more than 80% of your hips. And not over 40".

Dr Davis: Yes, the BMI has many weaknesses and can only serve as a crude index.

Body fat percent is far better, if you have access to it. This is becoming a much more practical measure, since electronic bioimpedance devices have become widely available. Though not perfect, they are reasonably accurate. However, I am unsure of the accuracy of this Body Fat Calculator, but it seems like a reasonable approximation.

If you are interested in measuring body fat percentages, these devices can be purchased at sporting good stores, some department stores, etc., manufactured by Tanita.

You're aiming for somewhere around <18% body fat, ideally <14% (in males) .
