Somebody gets the point I was trying to make. Obviously, I failed to explain myself well, and you have done it eloquently.

Both cases were studies in competing civil rights. And in both cases, it seemed to me that the courts didn't have to rule in such a way that one important civil right was subordinated to another.

But as you said, that would have involved 'calling a spade a spade' and this might lead to sensible compromises. Can't have that. <gg>

We can acknowledge that some freedom of association was lost in the cause of equal protection without undermining equal protection.
