Me: "We can acknowledge that some freedom of association was lost in the cause of equal protection without undermining equal protection."

You: "Brilliant." and

"But as you said, that would have involved 'calling a spade a spade' and this might lead to sensible compromises. Can't have that."

Methinks you are responding positively based on a misapprehension. I thought I was clear that equal protection trumps your freedom association every time. If it gives you succor that I recognize your loss of freedom of association in that transaction, fine. But if you think I meant that I support your right to associate when in involves discrimination, you are not only mistaken but you're feeding the very lack of differentiation of which I was trying to disabuse Dale.

My argument was that it should be possible to recognize your loss without appearing to tolerate discrimination. If you jump to the conclusion that my simple recognition of the loss of freedom of association means toleration of discrimination or support for "sensible compromises" on discrimination, as you have apparently done, you are reinforcing Dale's argument and undermining mine. All you get from me is recognition of your loss, not sympathy or support in getting restitution.

it seemed to me that the courts didn't have to rule in such a way that one important civil right was subordinated to another.

I didn't see any other alternative at the time and still don't.
