So, while the unions are have run their own industry into the ground, it clearly has been management who was foolish enough to allow them to do it by repeatedly giving in to demands to avoid facing strikes.

When did unions decide on the design of cars; innovations, and quality control? When did unions decide to put all their stock in SUVs when the press is screaming peak oil? And why aren't you asking the other obvious question......how big are the salaries of these mgmt righties? How many have golden parachutes are there at GM?

Unions may be part of the problem but the majority of the control is with mgmt and they have bungled every opportunity offered to them over past 20 years. For an example, even with some improvement, GM's cars couldn't get any uglier if they tried.
