Thanks for the insight. I think I may as well break for imaging software as well.

A question.... if you use imaging, do you have to re-register all your software, or will it be business as usual?

Also, when imaging, can you update incrementally -- simply adding things that have been altered since the last image was recorded?

Acronis and other imaging softwares are vital for computer security. But, I have a question. If you have a complete image of C: partition on a 2nd hard drive and then the original hard drive fails, how do you restore the image you made on another drive? Will an Acronis image self boot?

Earlier you mentioned XXcopy. Possibly you meant XXCLONE as XXcopy will not handle long file names or make a bootable copy.

I have used XXCLONE for many tasks for 10 years, used it dozens of times. It has never failed me. It makes a bootable copy on the backup drive and Microsoft's WGA never complains when I use the copy.
