yeah- we already have a great new invention pipeline anyway that is the envy of the world that started in govt (like with Darpa and the internet), that goes to universities and finally companies.

This has even worked with clean energy lately. FSLR First Solar is based on technology that was pioneered at NREL. NREL doesn't own first solar because its a commodity process but if it were patented NREL would have gotten money out of it. Either way its a win for the USA. So the new products pipeline is good here.

What ISN'T GOOD is the automotive industry in Detroit, that sues new inventions and blocks progress like any fuel efficiency improvements for 30 years. I could argue that the cumulative job loss from Detroits lobbying and lawsuits against fuel efficiency are MORE than 3 million over time - the same number that will disappear if detroit goes down.

I think this was a wake up call for that industry. It reminds me of John Stewart being shocked when Kerry lost in 04 (I was shocked too)... he said "wow the rest of the country doesn't like Will and Grace". I guess detroit is finding out that the rest of the country doesn't appreciate this relentless lobbying in favor of Gas Guzzlers.

The US spends 800 billion per year on foreign oil and that is a cost of maintaining Detroit also.
