That is nuts...and if social conservatives think they can win an election without the fiscally conservative side of the republican house, they are drinking something strange...." Huckabee: ["The greatest threat to classic Republicanism is not liberalism; it's this new brand of libertarianism, which is social liberalism and economic conservatism, but it's a heartless, callous, soulless type of economic conservatism because it says "look, we want to cut taxes and eliminate government. If it means that elderly people don't get their Medicare drugs, so be it. If it means little kids go without education and healthcare, so be it." Well, that might be a quote pure economic conservative message, but it's not an American message.]thenextright.com ============================================== I'd argue that, from a political point-of-view, (and Huckabee is a consummate, skilled politician, able to count votes with the best of 'em), ole 'Huck' has probably correctly noted that the *greatest threat* to the Authoritarian/Social Conservative Big Government faction that he draws most of his support from doesn't come from any revival of 'liberalism'... but rather comes from the Libertarian desire for smaller , less intrusive government that does not try to mandate how people are allowed to live their lives, nor tax them to enable the government to enforce policies and norms of behavior on the public, or throw it's weight around on the international stage. He has astutely identified where his true enemy lies. (Not among the old and discredited Liberalism --- (which shares a need for a Big Government along with the Authoritarian/Social Conservative faction), but among the advocates of personal freedom and a less expensive international footprint: the Libertarian/Fiscal Conservative faction.
