Dogs can sense fear. That's why police dogs can always find the bad guy. Because the mail carrier was afraid of dogs, she probably emitted something that alerted Bubba that all was not right and he reacted normally. Or she turned and started running, alerting the dog to do what comes natural.

I wonder if the P.O. offers information about what to do about dogs. It's got to be a very common problem - dogs just don't like that uniform for some reason.

Yes, they always do.

I imagine a carrier's life can be dangerous, though. Many are not responsible dog owners.
