We never hated him Dave. Gates always seemed to be a surprising, shining pearl of competence and service amid the rest of the Bush admin. swine. That Obama is keeping him on is a testament to Obama's pragmatism. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I still would have loved to have seen him get Barney Frank in there, tasked to end the wars, shrink the military and get open gays in there, free to fight like Alexander the Great, for the men they had sex with every night.
