I dont disagree with much in your post. I think saying we know bush would have won afganistan ignores the direction the war has been going in. Things suck there now as he leaves office. Frankly who is bush? Never heard of the dude. Of course its now obamas problem and i think Petraeus will be listened to among others. I have more worries about afganistan based on history and geography. How do you win afganistan? maybe you need to win in pakistan first? First thing i would do is to prioritize al quaeda as distinguished from the taliban. I would not let them regroup regardless of what side of afgan-pak border they are hiding in. Second, i would try my best for democratic outcome in afgan-pak but i would be under no illusions. Third, getting control of pak nukes would be high on my list even if it meant breaking up pakistan and insuring nukes would stay in safe part. Those are just some general ideas but our commander in chief will decide.

What did we WIN Dave? You never answer.

To me, it seems like we just installed the Shia in an Iraq that will be tightly allied with Iran as soon as we're gone. Which will cause us far more ongoing problems than Saddam EVER did.
