they have to be accurate in their reporting or they can be sued.. The tabloids should not be relied on just because they can be sued. If you are a famous figure, the law says you have to tolerate a lot more abuse and lies before you can win a libel suit, and even then you have to prove that the publication knew this information was false and published it with deliberate malice. Most of the tabs would love to be sued more often because it brings more attention to their mostly made-up stories. What they make in sales far outweighs their legal costs. A few people have won lawsuits against the tabs but not many. Most folks just ignore what's written there because let's face it, the folks who read and believe them aren't the sharpest knives in the block to begin with.
