Decades of caving to the pressure has brought us to this point. I saw this morning that the unions are ready to talk, which is a radical change from 10 or so days ago. It will be interesting to see where this leads.

They have sucked the Big 3 dry, to the point the body is nearly lifeless, almost a cadaver, and now the unions are willing to talk...

The law is designed to give them that power. It is unlikely to change to favor the long term viability of the job producers any time soon. One of the auto makers would have had to chosen to go out of business for the message to be delivered in a timely fashion. It is probably already too late.

They can hire scabs. They just can't have the Pinkertons (or the Feds) come in and beat the strikers into going back to work, like they used to..
