Thanks Jack! and Welcome back! ... interesting Java opinion: Other than a few hand-picked firms, it's hard to find anyone doing anything on the Mac. Windows NT is getting fewer new applications, and even more important, some key tools and new versions of products haven't so much slipped as been delayed, because firms either are putting more resources into Web stuff or just can't get the best programmers to work on NT instead of Java. At every software company there's a pecking order for project desirability. Lowest on the level is any driver-related activity. Next is maintenance/bug fixes. At the top, the most desirable project used to be working on Windows 95 or NT. Now it's all Java. (See related story, "Wanted: Full-time Java developers.") URL:zdnet.com Snipped from the story: Talented contract programmers are a key resource for many IT professionals who need to balance workloads and priorities. And it's this audience that is moving most rapidly toward Web-based activities. Some friends of mine who are contractors of this caliber, for example, are no longer doing anything that's not Web-based--and they're booked solid for the next six months. They used to do production NT application rollouts and debugging. Snipped text ends here, my comments follow: Now ... if only Intel and Sun would put a JVM in ROM and so that it could be included with every PC MotherBoard ... nobody would need Windows anymore! >>>> for 4-UR-Eyes-Only <<<< ... Java by itself, or in it's current form won't do what you ask ... but with a little help from the right vendors it could come pretty close with less than a few months of development time. I imagine that anyone that tries to do this will certainly have their MicroSoft license agreements cancelled though!
