UncleW, the war against Saddam in 1990 over Kuwait was a victory. So was the war against Saddam this century. He lost, he's dead. That's victory. The mess afterwards wasn't really a war so much as civil insurrection. The war against the Taleban was a victory too. Omar and Osama are apparently still alive, but being alive doesn't rate as victory. The USA won in South Korea, though not in North Korea. That's a victory albeit only half of one and USSR/China can claim victory in North Korea. It certainly wasn't a loss. The USA also won a war against Panama. There was a war against Grenada. Haiti too I think. They were won. There must be a list somewhere.

<The Pentagon was completed and DOD was manned at the conclusion of WWII.

America has not won a war since.

One of the benefits of USA wars from time to time is that places like Libya and China are somewhat circumspect about getting too stroppy over relatively minor issues such as Taiwan. They see what happens to the likes of Noriega, Saddam and co, and how trigger happy American soldiers are, and they keep their heads down and stay in their cages. Even the allies are gun-shy when Americans are on the loose in the vicinity - Dick Cheney shoots his shooting buddies even when they are close by in plain view!
