You don't have to stop; you do as has been suggested and slash it to more reasonable levels (half).

These people earned some retirement. But there is no reason they ought to retire with better than average lifestyles while the current employees have to give up their jobs and bring down the economy in the process.

What's your solution then? Get the current workers to be that much more productive and management to be that much more effective to make up for the generous benefits of people past?

Even with a bailout, there's no guarantee that the Big Three can sustain their bigger costs in the face of competition. That's the real problem that needs a permanent solution, not government-funded band-aids to the tune of $37B.
