TJ thinks the USA will be having food riots soon...

Message 25202500

We did have a rice panic here in Alaska earlier in the year, where a few old ladies got jostled aside by selfish youngsters trying to stock up. Now the local Wal-Mart has pallets of rice sitting in the aisles, which are ignored by customers who already have a year's supply at home.

The USA has 30 million people on the USDA "food stamp" welfare program, and can easily add millions more. Food will get cheaper as people cut back on non-essentials, freeing up resources for food production. The Western Hemisphere has a huge food surplus, so food riots and famine are pretty rare here. Starvation is much more likely in Asia and Africa.
