The rice panic was fun. I joined in and am still working my way through my hoard. It was silly and ridiculous because even at $5 a kilogram I could afford it if I wanted it and the potential cost saving was trivial. But it is fun to join in crowd scenes.

It was a fizzer really. Probably it was a promotional panic by rice growers to increase sales.

BTW, did you know there's a panic on milk and milk powder!! Stock up now. Quick. You won't want your children missing out. Butter too will be out of stock. Load up your freezer now! [I shall contact Fonterra and ask for a portion of the extra revenue if I can get that panic going].

On food riots, I'm trying to visualize huge obese people who can hardly waddle joining a riot and rampaging in the streets. They'd be exhausted before they have run 100 metres and would have trouble escaping from the police.

Are there really 30 million on food stamps? That's a vast number. That's 1 in 10 Americans. Surely not? Are that many people unable to do something useful enough to get sufficient food to feed themselves?

Soup kitchens are a good idea. People would have to walk to them 3 times a day to get food. That would be good exercize and sort out who really needs the food and who is just malingering. Those too fat to walk the distance would have to lose weight until they can walk. It would also be fun for them to meet some other people at the soup kitchen and they could help with potato peeling, dish washing etc.
