But the Secret Service is damned good at what they do and I have no doubt they are prepared for four years of working a lot of overtime to be sure nothing bad happens. They have got to be one of the most impressive organizations in existence. Yes, I've watched them in action at Obama rallies. They are impressive.

Lyndon was dead by then, but Lady Bird was still around, ran her wildflower foundation on the top floor and had her 24/7 Secret Service detail of luggage and grocery carriers. I got to know them real well, as the security office where they hung out was right next to my engineering office. They're a bunch of ridiculous yahoos like any other cops. They want to pack heat and have authority over others. The SS guys get to pack any kind of heat they want, and these had full auto Mac 10's, Uzi's - even an M-16 with a grenade launcher! Compared to other cops, I guess these guys were "winners", but in the world of SS, protecting ex-First Ladies is the bottom of the barrel. Lady Bird abused the hell out of them too.
