$3 tril is a lot more.

Which to the extent that $3tril has been wasted, makes it a much more important issue.

But it doesn't make it a relevant issue.

Just like my example of the threat of terrorism, and a speeding ticket. 9/11 was a much bigger deal than someone driving 71 mph on an interstate. But if the issue is the speeding ticket, 9/11 and other terrorist attacks are irrelevant. The judge isn't going to let you off because you say "but thousands of people died on 9/11".

Similarly $3tril is irrelevant to bailing out GM, Ford or Chrysler. Bailing them out, or not bailing them out doesn't effect the issue where you derive your $3tril number from. Its not as if you save the $3tril if you bail out the car companies.

Also we haven't spent $3tril on Iraq. But since that's a whole different subject, I'll accept the figure for the sake of argument for the rest of the conversation, rather than obscuring the issue being discussed.
