Friedman is getting less and less relevant over time.

Like you, he doesn't want to address the central issue, that the reason Detroit is in a quagmire is they've allowed the unions to repeatedly chop away at profits until there are none left.

As to the credit issue, the reason you don't understand what he said is that he doesn't, either.

I say you need to do with cars what we have done with cigarettes. If Americans want a gas guzzling SUV, then put a heavy tax on those cars......and use that tax money to promote green technology or develop more mass tranist. Make them pay for their extravagance......just as people pay for the privilege of smoking.

Agree 100%. Except the cost to our society of gas guzzlers is far higher than a person smoking. Politically and economically.
