One of the highlights every year is a cruise that the Navy League sponsors on a Navy ship. I've been fortunate enough to be able to go on a few of them. The trip starts at 4:00 a.m. by boarding a bus at L.A. Harbor and going to the Navy base in San Diego where they serve breakfast aboard the ship. Then it's a trip back up to L.A. aboard the ship. You're given free rein of the whole ship, including the bridge while underway. They perform maneuvers and demonstrations of the ship's capabilities.

Once while serving on a Committee Boat during one of the club's races, I was impressed with the knowledge the Navy guys on board had. There were a couple of Navy ships docked at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station way in the distance. They were able to put a name to the ships just by looking at the silhouette of the super-structures. Part of their training was to recognize any ship at a distance.

Among those I've been on are:

USS Stethem, another destroyer, which is the first U.S. Navy warship named to honor the life and service of Steelworker Second Class (DV) Robert Dean Stethem, USN (1961 - 1985). Petty Officer Stethem entered the Navy on May 4, 1981. He attended recruit training in Great Lakes, Illinois. He was shot to death, after being tortured, by the terrorists on June 15, 1985.
