I think Obama's speechifyin' is just fine and very free of "ums". It's when he goes extemporaneous that the "ums" start to drop, like when he's asked a question.

I think he realizes the power his words can have, and want to be very careful with them. The "um" is a stall that lets him consider and choose his words. What he needs to do, is develop a stall that comes across better on TV.

I do know the difficulty of getting rid of the "ums", having taken a speech class myself. But Obama is in speech class EVERY DAY, and has been for about 3 years now. Much longer and much more important than a semester-long class.

Like watching pro sports, I can criticize players for stuff they do even though I can't do it myself, because that's their JOB.

Anyway, I hope Tommaso is right, that it's just a pause to think before he answers, because the video I posted shows what happens when you don't, or in the case of W's debate clip, what happens when you do and all you can see is a squirrel running in its wheel. How W EVER recovered from the 2004 debates is beyond me, the first few were clear indicators of his utter cluelessness.
