I regard Intel's response to the X64 as an example of how a good management team can recover from a very serious strategic blunder and get back on top - probably better for the experience.

That points to AMD's problem, always being one foot in the grave. They don't have the the luxury of playing the chess game. I only wonder if they could have delayed 86-64 just a bit longer lulling Intel to make a deeper commitment to Itanium. Not that they would have known. It might have been a fortunate strategic delay.
