Why do we have that duty? Why isn't that the duty of the whole world?

All valid questions so commonly found among our traditional isolationist culture. We have a history of wishing to avoid foreign entanglements, but we found that WWII and the post war period forever changed that.

But no country in the world is independently as strong as the US, nor possesses the economic or military capacity to project power overseas. It's not easy being the lead dog, but unless you are, the scenery never changes. And no matter much the rest of the world might b*tch and moan about US policies, they rely upon us for leadership. The current clash between Gazans and Israelis being a case in point. Everyone is relying upon the US to propose a peace plan.

Our country is crumbling and you bitch and moan about us investing in our own energy infrastructure,

Maybe you haven't noticed, but EVERYONE'S country is crumbling. Just as the Icelanders.. ;0(

They are placing great hopes on being a global center of hydrogen production. But guess what?? It ain't going to make a difference if their cost of hydrogen production exceeds the global cost of drilling/pumping crude oil. And with their economy in a shambles, they're going to be hard put to find the financing their need to make it happen.
