You really are missing the bigger picture. If we became oil independent, every Western country would want to do it. And btw, you really need to study "economies of scale" before we have further discussions. You have continually claimed that alternative energy is more expensive than oil and gas and coal, but continually ignore the impact that economies of scale will have on pricing. In addition, you continually ignore externalities and our massive subsidies of oil.

Once we moved to alternatives, it would flood our economy with new money and new jobs and free us from dependence and trade deficits with the Middle East. When other countries followed our lead to do the same, it would collapse the price of oil permanently, as demand plummeted. Even if no other country became oil independent, our country's dramatic reduction of oil demand would be enough to collapse the price of oil and dry up the wealth in the Middle East. The US consumes 25% of global demand for oil, which means any action we take to reduce demand will have a very significant impact on price.

Again, for you and I to have an intelligent debate, you need to study up on the following two topics:
1) economies of scale
2) demand reduction impacts on commodity prices
