In hindsight, yes and I see that it underperformed by far.

But today everything appears to be different. SRS and SKF add 2% and more, while the RUT is up more than 2% and the S&P 1.7%
I think it was a tax loss selling issue. Why not sell a losing long position at the end of the year? The interesting thing is that the SRS and SKF purchases could again drive the underlyings...

The SRS ends up 5% today (AH: 6%) Interesting. Some folks tell me that lot of sentiment comes from the sharp T reversal...

is there any reason to prefer long SRS to short URE (assuming you're able to do the latter)?

Just like clockwork, the past three trading days ask the question yet again. If you were long SRS, you're down a point, but if you shorted URE (theoretically the same thing), you're still (just barely) up.
