There was a time that tweaking the economy would put the economy back on track. Not anymore.
Economist -in the past- would cut taxes or raise them, help sectors in trouble, concerted action to to prop or drop the USD, put tariff or non-tariff barriers to help ailing areas, bail out an industry here and there, dole out contracts for national champions...

Those were remedies that kept the rich nations afloat in the past 3 and 1/2 decades. Once the system ran completely out of steam, all its juice has been drawn, we reached a point where system faces a structural adjustment of magnitude 9 in the Richter scale.

It is akin to Mt. Saint Helens blowing its top, or a tectonic plate let go the stored energy a give a jolt.

Do you also see winners? Soros: China could easily emerge as the great winner if the Chinese leaders handle the situation well. On the other hand, they could also turn out to be the biggest losers if they handle it poorly. If the management turns out be wrong, this could lead to a political crisis in China. It's still too early to declare winners and losers.
